Lord and Lady Douglas The Baron and Baroness of Drumlanrig
Our Lord James and Lady Mary have arranged for the household to travel with the royal court. Our home is the120,000 acres of the Queensberry Estate surround Drumlanrig Castle. Most of the Estate is tenanted farms. Many of these are hill farms producing lambs and beef cattle. The 3000 acres of in hand farms concentrate mainly on dairy farming although there are some sheep, beef cattle and arable crops, including potatoes. The high rainfall in this area favors livestock and milk rather than cereals.The high rainfall also benefits tree growth. Soils and conditions make for the production of good quality softwood timber from conifers, which probably grow faster here than anywhere else in Europe. There are 10 000 acres of forestry of a mixed range of age and species.
Mistress Margret
Is an accomplished gentlewoman who is well known throughout the shire for her mastery of Ladies crafts. You can expect to meet the good mistress as she spins the finest yarn, produces lovely lace,or embroiders the perfect black work.
Garreth and Mark the Pages
The sons of a local noble man Garreth and Mark are Lord James’s pages. They spend their days running household errands, always sneaking away to play with the other children of the shire, and avoiding lessons.
John Fleming the sixth
The Younger brother of Lady Mary, as the only son of a prominent nobleman (the fifth Lord Fleming) John spends his days at leisure hawking, hunting, drinking, gaming, and wooing the Ladies of the court.
The Staff
These are the grooms, maids, gentlemen and gentlewomen who keep the household running. Even on progress daily chores cannot be forgotten, however festival days grant the household staff some unusual free time to enjoy the offerings of the shire.
